MeloVox - Vocal Harmony 1.05

MeloVox is an AUv3 vocal harmonizer that offers the capability to produce up to five simultaneous harmonies. It provides users with two options for generating harmonies: automatic creation based on live vocal input or control via MIDI input for precise pitch selection.

The device features two distinct algorithms tailored for different applications—one optimized for vocals, which incorporates formant preservation, and a more traditional option suited for instrumental use.

What sets MeloVox apart from many conventional pitch shifters is its foundation on a phase vocoder architecture, which effectively preserves formants. This results in more natural-sounding vocal harmonies, a notable improvement especially when pitching vocals an octave higher, where traditional methods often lead to the "Mickey Mouse effect." This phenomenon occurs because all frequencies and their associated harmonic peaks are transposed intact, creating sounds that the vocal tract cannot produce authentically. MeloVox addresses this challenge through its advanced formant-preserving capabilities.

The ability to create up to five additional harmonies is contingent upon the selected control mode, which offers five options: Auto Sense, Fixed Pitch, and three MIDI-controllable modes named Chords, Melody, and Vocoder.

• Auto Sense: This mode detects the frequency of the incoming vocal and automatically generates harmonies according to the specified key and scale.
• Fixed Pitch: Users can define fixed offsets within a scale without engaging pitch detection.
• Chords and Melody: These modes utilize incoming MIDI data to precisely manipulate harmonies through MIDI notes from a master keyboard or DAW.
• Vocoder: The included 12-band vocoder is designed for ease of setup, utilizing an internal carrier source.

MeloVox also features a built-in noise gate aimed at reducing unwanted background noise to enhance pitch tracking quality. Additionally, it includes a vocal doubler that can create a spacious stereo effect on any monophonic vocal performance. Users have access to a 10-band EQ and reverb effects that can be applied to either the original vocal track or the harmonies alone.

The software’s preset manager conveniently organizes user-created presets into categories through a drag-and-drop interface, while the Set List function allows quick switching between presets during live performances. It even accommodates the addition of acapella vocals for testing presets in real time as they’re developed.
